Skiing and Snowboarding
Just around the corner from our cabin is the Tahoe Donner Ski Area!
Tahoe Donner Ski Area (See map at right) - 12850 Northwoods Blvd, Truckee - (530) 587-9443 Web Site - Tahoe Donner Home Page
Boreal - Located at the top of the pass on I-80. Boreal is especially popular with snow boarders with a great park & half pipe. Web Site - Boreal Home Page
Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort- Located off Highway 267 from I 80 only about 25 minutes from Truckee. Northstar has undergone a major, heavy-duty renovation and officially challenged Squaw as the most hoighty-toighty ski resort in the Tahoe area. If you want a lift ticket you'll pay enough support the upgrades, and many people think it's worth it! Web Site - Northstar-At-Tahoe Resort
Squaw Valley - Located about 30 minutes drive from Truckee by heading up Highway 89 toward Tahoe City. One of the oldest and perhaps the most venerable of all ski resorts in california, Squaw Valley hosted the 1960 Olympics. OK, so most of you weren't around in 1960, that was when the President was Eisenhower (WWII General), the hot movie was "Psycho" (Hitchcock) and lasers were invented. Well Squaw is still hopping and offers world class skiing for every level, ice skating, and an unbelievable tram ride. Web Site - Squaw Valley USA Home Page
Alpine Meadows - Also off Highway 89 from Truckee to Tahoe City just before River Ranch (where you got out of your raft this summer and had a cold adult beverage, remember? Nah, I didn't think so.) I have never skied here but lots of people love it. Web Site - Alpine Meadows Ski Area Home Page
Soda Springs - Take the Soda Springs exit off I 80 before you get to Boreal coming east (or after coming west - duh). Billed as a great place for kids. Web Site - Soda Springs Web Site
Equipment Sales/Rentals
Are you lacking the right equipment to goofy-foot into a bonk? Need a stomp pad? Here are some great shops in Truckee who can get you in some sick equipment and out of waiting in line at the slopes! There are others in town but these ones are closest to the cabin:
Black Tie Ski Rentals - Just the best-of-the-best-of-the-best-SIR! These guys and gals come to you, novel concept huh? Ever order a pizza for delivery? Well, that's what you get with Black Tie...well...without the pizza. (530) 550-1092. Web Site - Black Tie Rentals Home Page
The Back Country - Excellent shop with friendly, friendly staff. Great place year round for sales and rentals. I got an awesome rental bike there at the end of the '05 season. (Hey guys, one piece of advice - put your blankety-blank address on your home page, you DO want people to find you don't you? That's index.htm you propeller head!) 11400 Donner Pass Road, 530-582-0909. Web Site - The Back Country Home Page
Granite Chief - A nice roomy shop, easy parking. (Also have a shop at Squaw. Give me a break on the jr high garage band music on the web site!). 11368 Donner Pass Rd, (530) 587-2809. Web Site - Granite Chief web Site
Dave's Skis and Boards - Never been here but maybe you will! 10200 Donner Pass Rd. (530) 582-0900. Web Site - Dave's Ski Shop
Nordic Skiing
Wow, there are a lot of places to cross country ski around Truckee! Here is a link that hopefully still works with a huge list of places to go - Nordic Skiing Links
Royal Gorge Cross Country Resort - The grand-daddy of nordic skiing in North America. I've never been here because I tried cross country once with a maniac friend who took me on about a twenty mile running jaunt...all I can say is I love lifts!!! Take the Soda Springs exit off I 80 and follow signs to Summit Station. While you're over there go for a drink at the 1-800-500-3871, Web Site - Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort Home Page
Sledding
Did you say K.I.S.S. is your philosophy? Well here are some places to keep it simple - slide - crash - drink nice beverages - sit by the fire to dry out - ahhhhh....
Tahoe-Donner - The ski resort has a snow play area and at Trout Creek Recreation Center they take down the nets on the driving range to let you slide out there as well. Tahoe Donner Home Page
Boreal - There's a great place to slide here too! Boreal Home Page
Ice Skating
Northstar-At Tahoe - There is a brand new rink right beside Starbucks at Northstar! Watch out for rotten little rich kids spitting off balconies outside their million dollar condos (First hand experience with that - Talk about foam on your latte!) Northstar-At-Tahoe Resort
Squaw Valley - Take the tram up and you can ice skate with a view (and a half). Squaw Valley USA Home Page
Snowmobiling
Here are some great places to go off road with your snowmobile!
Truckee Ranger District, 10342 Hwy 89 No., Truckee, CA 96161, (530) 478-6257. MC, 4WD, SMBL, DB.

Prosser Hills Area, Truckee Ranger District. MC, ATV, SMBL, 4WD. (530) 587-3558
Snowshoeing
OK, so you if have snowshoes, you've got the equivalent of hiker's 4-wheel drive for the snow so just pick a place to hike and go! It's wise to consider things like avalanches, taking food and water, letting people know where you're going and when you'll be back, weather reports, etc. Go here to the Summer Sports Details page to find links to hiking trails.
